A Cornavirus Rant

Advance warning – I’m angry.

When Covid first appeared last year, people were scared, but then due to the shoddy behaviour of this incompetent government, people became blasé about masks, hand washing, and most importantly, keeping their distance. The initial casualties were mainly the elderly, those with existing severe health conditions and health/care workers. All people, that for some reason, it is deemed ok if they die, no matter the grief and suffering their passing leaves behind.

Then Long Covid became a thing, this can affect anybody no matter their age, or whether they had asthma or diabetes, but because these poor people didn’t die, their suffering is deemed negligible, and the wearing of masks etc is considered an infringement on your civil liberties. Protecting other people became a chore, because “I’m alright, everyone I know is alright. Covid is a big worldwide hoax invented to control us”. A completely selfish and unacceptable opinion by anyone who wants to part of a civilised society.

Anyway, back to Covid, with the help of the government sending kids back to school and university and insisting people return to the office, as well the inspired(?) ‘Eat Out to Help Out’, we had another lockdown in November, but it wasn’t really a lockdown, because the schools were still open, and it didn’t stop the number of confirmed cases and deaths increasing. Then there was the ridiculous Tier system, which just encouraged people to travel further for their ‘substantial meal’.

So, what happened next, well it turns out we developed our own new, more contagious strain of Covid 19, and what did the government do, did they fix the broken Track & Trace system or lockdown the country? No, they introduced another level to the Tier system covering most of the country.

This new strain appears to be more infectious and the people in hospital now are generally younger than before. I know of people in their 50’s, that I grew up with, relatively fit & healthy, no underlying health conditions, who are seriously ill in hospital with fluids and oxygen being pumped into their bodies, and the husband of an old school friend died between Christmas and New Year.

It was considered sad, regrettable even, when it was mainly the elderly or those with severe underlying health conditions that died, because they were going to die sooner rather than later anyway. It wasn’t, it was a tragedy that families and friends are having to live with every day. However, the new strain is coming for younger, people who don’t have any existing health issues, and if it isn’t killing them, it is disabling them with Long Covid, reducing their ability to work and support their families.

Even after all these facts, the “my civil liberties are being encroached upon because you want me to wear a mask” people are still shouting loudly, spreading their germs as they do so, infecting more and more people to not just the misery of having to listen to their selfish grandstanding, but possibly to a lifetime of illness caused by Long Covid, or even death and grief for those left behind.

So, in conclusion, wear a mask, wash your hands, keep your distance, stick to your ‘bubble’, and you know what, we could end up enjoying life again just like the people living in New Zealand, Australia and CHINA are!

Oh, and while I’m at it, don’t watch a film on your mobile while you are crossing a busy main road, because you know what, that can kill you too!
